You can find chinchillas for sale in the U.S. but it was not always like that. These small rodents are native to South America and were all but on their way to extinction by the 1920s because of fur trading operations. Chinchillas have very dense fur, up to 80 hairs per follicle which is why this little critter was so sought after! That's what makes them such popular pets - now, you know why!
Are chinchillas hard to take care of? you must keep some things in mind about chinchillas before you can adopt one as your new pet. They require a lot fo maintenance and proper care otherwise they could get sick, stressed or unhealthy. Remember - owning a pet comes with responsibilities, no matter if it's a dog or a chinchilla! 1. Chinchillas chew—a lot! Chinchillas are rodents by nature, which means that their teeth need constant care and they will grow back to the point of being dangerous or lethal. You’ll want to make sure your chinchilla has a crunchy food such as fruit or some other rodent-healthy treat in order to help keep the nibbles at bay, but you may also want to provide them with pumice stones so as not only to help exercise their mouths but also in order to let them chew out any potential problems before they lead to bigger issues. As mentioned, it’s less difficult or time consuming on your part should you just refrain from giving your chinchilla any household objects as possible chew toys. 2. Chinchilla are active and fast. You don't want to catch this furry escape artist! Chinchillas are very fast and have a mind of their own. Since they enjoy running from predators, it's obvious why they have been known as the "furred tooth." But be careful! This chinchilla has quite an adventurous personality so if you let him out of his cage he will surely not stay around for long if there is an opportunity for him to run away somewhere else. It's important to note that your adorable pet can fit into some tight spaces since he originally hails from the mountains where many hills are covered in dense vegetation, so it may take a little while to hunt down this guy! Fortunately, our pets aren't capable of jumping very high but be aware that they do hop across elevated surfaces regularly like tables and shelves because they consider these to be ideal play areas. 3. Chinchillas need a lot of space. Chinchillas need a lot of space! Chinchillas need a considerably larger cage when compared to other rodents. They must feel comfortable enough in their environment and enjoy being to themselves every once in awhile for that feeling of having their own space as it were. A home base that is at least 3’ H is ideal for giving him the space he craves to work off all that energy. Chinchillas like and appreciate the security of being able to go into hideaways where they can rest without anyone trying to bother them and demand attention or playtime so you can provide several hiding places within his cage that he can lay cozily within whenever he chooses.
